Medtronic and Stryker, producers of BMP products, are cautioning physicians about their use after a U.S. study showed their bone growth agents for spinal fusion after neck surgery can cause complications and cost more than anticipated. The BMP protein product has been the subject of safety questions since last year when it was reported the product was used for treatments that have not been approved by the FDA. A Medtronic spokeswoman said its BMP product carries a warning on the label about neck complications, and Stryker cautioned its product was to be used only for approved purposes.
