Medtronic’s request for FDA approval of its less-invasive pediatric heart valve goes before an advisory committee later in July. The device in question is a heart valve that can be implanted in children without a need for open-heart surgery. The committee recommends to the FDA whether to approve a device, and those recommendations usually are accepted. Medtronic has spent $1 billion this year to buy a pair of startups that were developing transcatheter valves. Now Medtronic faces competition in the field from St. Jude Medical. (Click here for more)
