American Medical Gets FDA Clearance For Female SUI Device

American Medical Systems Holdings received FDA clearance for its MiniArc Precise Single-Incision Sling system for stress urinary incontinence in women. American Medical says more than 33 million women have the condition in which a simple sneeze can place undue pressure on the bladder. The company said the newly approved device is an improvement on its 2007 device to make the device easier to use. (Click here for more)

Abbott Optics Subsidiary Head Named New Chairman Of AdvaMed

Abbott Medical Optics Chairman James Mazzo has agreed to serve as chairman of the Advanced Medical Technology Association the next two years. The trade group represents the medical device industry. Mazzo replaces Mike Mussallem, CEO of Edwards Lifesciences. Abbott Medical Optics was bought by Abbott Laboratories last year while Mazzo was CEO of the unit. (Click here for more)

Covidien Completes $210 Million Takeover Of Aspect Medical Systems

Covidien has completed its $210 million acquisition of Aspect Medical Systems, a maker of brain-monitoring systems. The deal closed when accepted tender offers amounted to 89.58 percent of Aspect common stock. The takeover includes additional shares purchased by Covidien subsidiary Transformer Delaware. A Covidien executive said the purchase of Aspect would expand the Ireland-based company’s monitoring portfolio. (Click here for more)

American Medical Sells Female Product Line To Conceptus

American Medical Systems Holdings has sold part of its business to Conceptus for $23.6 million, clearing the seller to focus on its pelvic-health lines. The business involved in the transaction includes its Ovion technology and female sterilization assets. The rest of American Medical’s business focuses on incontinence, erectile dysfunction and pelvic devices. Conceptus focuses on developing contraceptives. American Medical Thrives By Serving Popular Elective-Surgery Market

American Medical Systems Holdings continues to buck the trend and profit well from serving the elective-surgery market with medical devices. Even in a falling economy when anything but life-threatening procedures would be expected to experience a slowdown, American Medical continues to beat market expectations with its revenue results. As would be expected in a tight economy, growth in treatment for chronic problems was slow as men tended to delay treatment. But American Medical has a strong position in the market for products such as urinary sphincters and slings for handling incontinence, particularly among men who have had prostate surgery.
