B. Braun To Market Angiotech Suture System In U.S., Three Other Nations

B. Braun has signed a deal with Angiotech Pharmaceuticals of Canada to market the firm’s Quill knotless suture system in the United States. The deal is an exclusive one for B. Braun, which also is to market the device in France, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Neither party revealed the financial terms of the agreement, which is to cover the next five years. B. Braun, Indian State Form Project To Treat 1,000 Dialysis Patients

B. Braun of Germany plans to use a public-private partnership in India to establish 11 centers and equip them with 111 hemodialysis machines. The public part of the project is the Andhra Pradesh government, set to operate the venture over the next seven years. The new centers would double the number of clinics available in the state, allowing them to treat another 1,000 patients. Three of the planned centers already are operational. (Click here for more)

Over the past few decades, the wound closure market has seen the introduction of a number of new technologies, including a variety of surgical adhesives and glues for both external and internal use to hold tissues together and/or reinforce surgical suture or staple lines. These products address a market that encompasses over 73 million surgical wounds annually in the US alone and generated sales of over $367 million in the US last year, according to Medtech Insight's recently published report US Markets for Current and Emerging Wound Closure Technologies. The US market for surgical sealants and glues is growing at an annual rate of about 3.8% and is expected to reach about $443 million in sales by 2013. Read more...

B. Braun Syringe Supplier Received FDA Warning Letter

One of B. Braun Medical’s manufacturers of medical syringes has received a warning letter from the FDA because of its the quality-control system. A just-released agency warning letter to AM2PAT cited nine serious violations at the plant where it made syringes with heparin and saline to flush IV lines. Those violations were the cause of a recall a year ago of B. Braun’s syringes. The needles are the same ones that sparked a bacterial-infection outbreak allegedly linked with five deaths and hundreds of illnesses even though the warning letter had been issued two years before the outbreak. B. Braun contracted with the company after corrections of the problems cited in the letter and ended its work with the company early last year. (Click here for more)

B. Braun Plans Hires To Meet Intravenous Delivery Device Demand

B. Braun Medical says it plans to buck the trend of medical device makers of trimming expenses and instead hire an additional 300 employees in the coming years as part of an expansion plan. The 300 would equal a 22 percent increase from the current staff size of 1,360 to meet an expected demand for its products. The B. Braun product line includes its Duplex intravenous drug-delivery system. The U.S. unit accounts for about a quarter of the operation of the parent firm, German’s B. Braun Melsungen. Widower Sues Baxter, B. Braun Over Contaminated Syringes

A suit has been filed in a federal court naming Baxter International, its Baxter Healthcare subsidiary and B. Braun Medical, maker of the syringes involved, as responsible for a patient’s serious medical problems. The suit was filed in a U.S. District Court in Nebraska by the widower of a cancer patient who received injections in 2007 as part of her cancer treatment. She died a year later at age 82. The suit alleges each manufacturer played a role in the distribution of the saline syringe. A B. Braun attorney declined to comment. (Click here for more)
