BD To Build Distribution Center, Create 190 Jobs In North Carolina

Becton Dickinson plans to take advantage of the state’s $600,000 incentive offer and build a new distribution center in North Carolina. The project is expected to create 190 jobs by 2015, according to the governor. The East Coast distribution facility is expected to begin operation in 2012, near where BD has had large-scale operations for more than 40 years that currently employ 700 workers. Alcon, Becton Dickinson Major Medical-Device Givers To Haiti Relief

Becton, Dickinson and Alcon Laboratories are medical-device makers who, along with several drug makers, have contributed millions to earthquake-devastated Haiti. In general, health care companies are estimated to have donated more than $66 million in products and money to the nation since the January disaster. Of that amount, Alcon donated $3 million worth of eye products and BD $5 million worth of equipment, including catheters, needles and syringes. (Click here for more)

BD Selling Two Units To Focus On Parenteral Drug Delivery

Becton Dickinson is selling two of its business units to a private equity company. BD said the sale, for an amount not disclosed, includes its eye-care systems and some of its surgical products such as blades, some catheter platforms and critical-care devices. The buyer is RoundTable Healthcare Partners. BD CEO Edward Ludwig said that by selling off the two units, his firm would be able to focus on businesses that fit more strategically with its emphasis on parenteral medication delivery. Abbott Patent Fight With BD Leads To Wider Appeals Court Review

An Abbott Laboratories patent dispute with Beckton Dickinson over a glucose monitor has led a U.S. Appeals Court panel to seek a full-court review of allegations of fraud in patent filings. The judges in the District of Columbia circuit are to examine deception and other conduct in obtaining product patents. Patents are unenforceable if obtained fraudulently. The issue that brought the matter to the court involved Beckton Dickinson’s former glucose-monitoring business, which it has since sold, and Nova Biomedical, which won a lower-court ruling the BD patent was invalid. The ruling, however, is not part of the Appeals Court’s current consideration. (Click here for more)

Becton, Dickinson Spent $120,000 Lobbying Against New Excise Tax

Becton Dickinson spent $120,000 on federal lobbying activities in the fourth quarter, according to required filings to Congress. The expenditures covered lobbying against the health care-reform legislation enacted in March. BD reported it also lobbied on legislation intended to prevent infections spread by bacteria in hospitals and doctor’s offices. Abbott Loses U.S. Appeal Of Patent-Infringement Case Against BD

Abbott Laboratories lost its federal appeal of a lower-court ruling it could not sue Becton Dickinson and Nova Biomedical for patent infringement. A District Court jury ruled in 2008 that a patent for Abbott’s glucose-monitors was invalid and an Appeals Court now has affirmed the ruling. Abbott said it was considering its options, which include an appeal to the U.s. Supreme Court. The original case involved BD’s Test Strips. (Click here for more)

Becton Dickinson CEO Got 19.2 Percent Compensation Increase

Becton Dickinson’s CEO received more than $9 million in compensation this year, a 19.2 percent increase over the previous year. Securities and Exchange Commission filings showed Edward Ludwig received a base salary of just over $1 million, a 1 percent increase. BD Completes $275 Million Buy Of HandyLab Diagnostics Maker

Becton Dickinson says it has completed its $275 million acquisition of HandyLab, a specialist in molecular diagnostics. BD and HandyLab had begun an alliance earlier this year to combine BD’s GenOhm test with HandyLab’s Jaguar diagnostic. With the buy, BD gets ownership of the HandyLabs diagnostic platform, a hands-free operation that takes a test from sample preparation to detection. (Click here for more)

Becton Dickinson To Acquire HandyLab, Molecular Diagnostic Maker

Becton Dickinson plans to take over HandyLab, a University of Michigan spin-off that makes diagnostic tests at the molecular level. Terms of the proposed deal were not revealed. The firm was formed nine years ago with the help of several venture companies. BD said it would keep the company and its 62 employees in Ann Arbor, Mich. HandyLab’s first product was its Jaguar, which debuted nearly a year ago and has sold well since. BD and HandyLab had formed a partnership last May. Becton Dickinson Cleared To Market Fast-Acting Blood Analysis Device

Becton Dickinson has received FDA clearance to market its BD Vacutainer Rapid Serum Tube blood-collection device. The tube’s blood contents are ready for analysis within five minutes, compared with a 30-minute wait for clotting required by standard devices. The BD tube contains a gel additive to speed the clotting process, allowing it to be put in a centrifuge within five minutes of collection. (Click here for more)
