Cook Medical Recalls Tracheostomy Devices With Covidien Element

Cook Medical said it was recalling its Ciaglia Blue Rhino and Ciaglia Blue dolphin from the market because they rely on devices recalled earlier. At issue are 17 lots of Cook’s percutaneous tracheostomy devices that contain a device made by Covidien. The associated Covidien device is the Shiley tracheotomy tube, which the maker recalled in April because of problems with pilot balloons. Covidien said the devices were subject to malfunctioning. Zimmer, Biomet, Cook Lead Indiana Device Maker Fight Against New Tax

Zimmer Holdings, Biomet and Cook Group are among Indiana-based device makers who vow to continue challenging a health-care law placing new taxes on the industry in three years. The industry plans to press its opposition during the federal government’s effort to draft regulations to carry out the law. Some device makers expect to use the fall federal elections to gain a reduction or repeal of the tax. Kem Hawkins, president of Cook Medical, said the new law would cost his firm as much as $20 million a year. Cook makes stents and catheters among its many medical devices. (Click here for more)

Cook Stent Graft Suit Against Endologix On Hold Pending Patent Review

Cook’s patents for stent grafts are to undergo a review by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, resulting in a hiatus of a suit the firm filed against Endologix. A federal judge ordered a stay in the case pending the review to check on Endologix’s contention other patents existed before Cook’s two patents, bringing into question the legitimacy of the Cook patents for endovascular stent grafts. Cook sued Endologix when it developed grafts to treat aneurysms. (Click here for more)

Cook Group Founder Urges Different Approach To Health-Care Reform

Cook Group’s founder, Bill Cook, looked beyond the firm’s core medical device business to other parts of the health-care industry to suggest reform solutions. Cook urged the federal government to create a network of clinics around the country and a federal insurance program for hospital procedures among solutions to fix the system. Cook Medical has sued Endologix in federal court, arguing the company violated Cook patents for two of its stent systems, one a week away from expiration. Cook said the patents at issue were issued for endovascular stent grafts to treat blood vessel disease. Endologic said it was reviewing its patent situation. Cook Medical Head Decries Try To Tax Device Makers For Health Reform

Cook Medical is challenging congressional efforts to pass health care reform that would rely in part on $4 billion a year in revenue from the medical device industry over the next 10 years. Cook President Ken Hawkins said in an interview each company would have to pay according to its share of the market. He said that would be a tax that “almost certainly would slow future job growth.” Cook produces stents, catheters, surgery needles and other devices used in hospitals. (Click here for more)

Zimmer Holdings, DePuy, Biomet and Cook Group, all device makers located in Indiana, have demonstrated an ability to weather the current economic climate, but still face challenges. Zimmer, Biomet and DePuy, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, are makers of orthopedic products and have made Warsaw, Ind., a hub for orthopedic products such as artificial joints in the United States. Cook Group, in Bloomington, Ind., also has been growing despite the recession. But observers believe they all face restrictive and difficult regulations from the federal government. Cook, J&J, Stryker Bone-Cement Surgery Said No Better Than Placebo

Cook Medical, Johnson & Johnson and Stryker, which were allowed by the FDA to market a bone cement for use in non-prosthetic vertebroplasty without conducting a clinical trial, may have been selling a useless procedure, according to new studies. A federally funded study and another funded jointly by the Australian government and Cook Medical concluded the procedure led to results no better than a placebo, statistically. The discovery has prompted questions about the FDA’s relaxed regulatory rules for some medical devices such as bone cement. (Click here for more – a subscription may be required)

Cook, Angiotech Drug-Eluting Stent Approved By European Union

Cook Medical and Angiotech Pharmaceuticals report European approval of their jointly produced drug-coated stent, Zilver PTX. Cook and Angiotech said the stent already has been implanted in its first patients post-approval, on the same day in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The device licensed from Angiotech by Cook has not received approval yet in the United States. (Click here for more)

Cook Medical To Build New Production Plant In Illinois

Cook Medical Group has signed an agreement to build a new manufacturing plant for its medical devices in Canton, Ill. Cook Medical is building a 46,000-square-foot building, set to be completed next February. The estimated cost of the plant is $7.5 million.
