Wright Medical Spends On Center Upgrade During Economic Downturn

Wright Medical Technology is bucking the trend of fellow device makers reducing expenditures in the current economy by investing $10 million to upgrade its distribution center. Wright Medical has relied for growth during the economic downturn on its foot and ankle division, which has recorded 20 percent growth for the past 11 quarters. Wright also makes hip and knee implants. Other Memphis-based device makers, NuVasive and Onyx Medical, also have spent money recently expanding their operations. (Click here for more)

Medtronic’s Lead In Spinal Surgery Devices Gets NuVasive Challenge

Medtronic faces a challenge from NuVasive and its spinal surgery products after a national health insurer Aetna agreed to reimburse for use of its treatments. NuVasive also said UnitedHealth Group was about to announce clearance for its products. Medtronic is the global leader in the market, and NuVasive was considered to have about 5 percent of that market before the insurer decisions. (Click here for more)

NuVasive To Acquire Cervitech In Potential $80 Million Deal

NuVasive has agreed to acquire Cervitech, giving the maker of spine disorder devices a cervical disc replacement device still in development. The purchase price could amount to $80 million if Cervitech gets FDA approval of its PCM cervical disc system. NuVasive is to pay $47 million up front, as much as half of it in stock. Cevitech’s PCM is undergoing a U.S. trial expected to be completed by the end of the year. (Click here for more)
