Terumo, Fujifilm and Olympus, all Japanese device makers, are expanding their presence in South and Central America. The firms seek to compete with the U.S. and European companies that now dominate the growing market for high-quality medical devices. Terumo has set up a unit in Bogota, Colombia, and expects to begin operations there by the end of July. Fujifilm, a Fujifilm Holdings unit, has sales agreements in several Central American countries while Olympus is developing endoscopes for markets in Central America and in Brazil.
